Legislative Update

Highlights of our recent legislative sessions include:

Tax relief
Kansans will now receive millions in tax cuts. Many elderly citizens will qualify for the benefit of a Social Security exemption from state income tax. Low-income homeowners will be eligible for state assistance on insurance premiums. Small businesses will benefit with the phase-out of the franchise tax, encouraging entrepreneurial growth of businesses and jobs.

Tougher crime penalties
Alexa's Law makes it a crime to kill or injure an unborn child during an attack on the mother.

Education improvements
Public education improvements allow Johnson County schools to raise "local option budgets" through local elections.

Protection of 2nd Amendment rights
Protection for concealed carry in Kansas was upheld.

Assistance for Kansans with special needs
The Legislature provided assistance for the disabled, those with autism, and those receiving home-based social services.

Prudent health care reforms
Assistance with insurance premiums for low-income families and hard-to-insure groups will now be available.

University improvements
Maintenance and repairs at Kansas' universities were provided for in the 2007 session.
