Representative commits to vote against efforts to increase taxes, challenges opponent to sign the pledge BONNER SPRINGS, KS. - Kansas Representative Owen Donohoe (R-Shawnee) signed the Taxpayer Protection Pledge and challenged his opponent to do the same at a press conference June 25, 2008 at Moon Marble in Bonner Springs. By signing the Pledge, Rep. Donohoe showed his commitment to Kansas families by stopping unfair and burdensome tax increases. "I will vote against any new tax increase unless it is approved by Kansas voters," says Rep. Donohoe. The Taxpayer Protection Pledge, sponsored by Americans for Tax Reform, was introduced with the endorsement of President Reagan in 1986. Today, more than 1,200 state officeholders, more than 40 U.S. Senators, and 192 members of the U.S. House of Representatives have signed the Pledge. "Americans, now more than ever, need leaders committed to fiscal responsibility and pro-growth economic policies," said Grover Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform. In his first term in the Kansas legislature, Rep. Donohoe opposed new tax increases for both individuals and businesses, and supported tax reductions for families, senior citizens and businesses. He was named "Champion of the Taxpayer" and a "Pro-Jobs Legislator" while in office. Rep. Donohoe challenges his opponent in the upcoming election to join him in signing the Taxpayer Protection Pledge. "I have committed to putting the interests of the taxpayers I represent first," says Rep. Donohoe. "I sincerely hope my opponent will follow my lead and sign the pledge to protect the interests of the taxpayers and take important steps like this to help reduce the massive state debt." Rep. Donohoe represents the 39th District in Kansas, which includes Basehor, Bonner Springs, and portions of Leavenworth and western Shawnee.
